Why page 1 & place 1?

Why does every company, its aunt and dog want to improve its ranking and end up at number 1 on Google?

The answer is quite simple: because most users are only interested in page one. And page one often only shows the first results. Being listed here as a company with a website therefore helps you enormously to attract customers.

Why Google in particular?

Search engines are a dime a dozen - and Google is just one of them. Nevertheless, it is exciting to note that Google is already Number 1 for ages .

In May 2024, it was at 80.49 percent market sharefollowed by Bing as the search engine with the second largest market share - although this was still only 11.4%*. There is therefore a difference of 69 % between Google and the "second best" search engine.

Optimizing your website for other search engines is therefore only worthwhile if you serve other markets, e.g. if you want to sell products on the Russian market. There, the search engine Yandex is far ahead. On the Chinese market, it is Baidu.

This will get you a top ranking

The advantages of a good ranking can already be seen from the previous text. Here again at a glance:

  • More visibility & reach on the Internet: If you are far ahead, you will be seen by more people. This means you can reach them better with your content.
  • Better than the competition: With a top ranking you will overtake your competition and be seen before them.
  • More clicks: The first results receive the most clicks.
  • More website visitors: More people visit your website. If the content is good, you can keep them there.
  • More customers: Since the first results get the most clicks, your chances of converting users into customers are also better.

Rank 1 on Google through these measures

From design to keywords to good content: there are many measures you can take to rank number 1 on Google.

1. usability - incredible instead of cumbersome

A user searches online. A user finds and clicks. And is gone again immediately.

This is something that should not happen to you. Google recognizes this behaviour and rates your page as unhelpful in such cases. If this happens too often, your ranking can deteriorate. Why does this happen?

Because search engines can now recognize, how long users stay on a website (dwell time). And Google also notices whether users "click around" on your website or leave again after a short visit to a page (bounce rate).

For you, this means that you should Keep users on your website for a long time and get them to click around a lot. And that's where usability comes into play.

This includes two sub-items in particular:

  • Design: Websites should always be attractively designed. Appealing here means: suitable for the target group, not too cluttered, broken up by images/videos etc.
  • Structure/Navigation: Easy and intuitive operation is the be-all and end-all. Users must be able to find what they are looking for quickly. Content should be divided into topic blocks using headings and each subpage should only deal with one topic.

2. content - cool instead of chanceless

When a user searches for something on the Internet, Google wants them to find the desired answer finds. Because only then will Google as a search engine be rated as good and helpful - and used again for the next search query.

Google's claim to always deliver the best results therefore has less to do with altruism and more to do with profitability. But the consequence remains the same: your content must have a Added value deliver.

This means that your content...

  • ... must be interesting for your target group
  • ... does not contain unnecessary blah-blah, but gives users the answer they were looking for
  • ... but still deals with the chosen topic precisely enough
  • ... must be well structured (subheadings)
  • ... is as multimedia-based as possible (pictures & videos break up the text)

Another tip for the ranking of your website: Avoid duplicate content (duplicate content). If you steal content from the competition, this is not appreciated. And if you repeat too much content on your own pages, you confuse Google and the ranking of the affected pages can also deteriorate (Google no longer recognizes what the original is).

3. keywords - class instead of mass

When it comes to keywords, two points come into play. You need:

  • the right keywords
  • the right amount of keywords

"The right keywords" means that you need to know which terms your target group uses to search for your type of service or product.

Example: Are you looking for "workshop" or "car repair shop"? Search for "nail design"
or after "getting your nails done"?

You then use this to select your keywords and optimize your website accordingly. This is the only way to hit the search intent.

Our tip therefore: Always start with keyword research.

"The right amount of keywords" means that you shouldn't simply squeeze your keyword 500 times into a 300-word text to improve your ranking. The times when this worked are long gone. Quite the opposite: so-called "keyword stuffing" is often even negatively devalued.

Always pay attention to a suitable keyword density in your search engine optimization and place keywords naturally and stylistically appropriately.

4. links - proportionate instead of too many

There are three different types of links: internal, external and backlinks.

4.1 Internal links

If you link from one of your subpages to another subpage of your website (e.g. from a product page to your contact page), this is an internal link.

These links help Google to Connections between your subpages and better understand the structure of your website. Not surprisingly, link building is an important part of search engine optimization (SEO). Users also find what they are looking for very quickly and click around more.

4.2 External links

External links, on the other hand, are created when you from your website to a completely different website link. Important here:

  • only link to trustworthy pages
  • only link to pages that fit thematically
  • Do not set too many external links

Otherwise, the links are not only inappropriate, but can also damage your ranking. And then it's: Bye-bye, Google rank 1.

4.3 Backlinks

These are links from another website to your website. So the other side "recommends" youwhich is a good signal for the search engines.

However, such links only offer you advantages if they come from trustworthy websites. However, you have no real influence on this, as anyone on the World Wide Web can link to your website if they want to.

5. recommendations - better honest than bought

The topic of recommendations is similar to that of links. This is because external links and backlinks also serve as such.

In this specific case, however, it's all about Google reviews. Pages should not only offer added value and be easy to navigate, they should also be trustworthy and this is where the ratings come into play.

Because if there are many positive opinions about your company on the Internet (e.g. on Google Company Profile, in company directories, etc.), it is more likely that you will attract more visitors to your website. Traffic increases and this sends positive signals.

Important: We advise against buying Google reviews, as this is against the guidelines.
of the search engine. It is also usually illegal.

6. loading time - powerful instead of lengthy

Do you know the song "Hung up" by Madonna? One line in it goes: "Time goes by so slowly" - and that would be the negative example. Because when it comes to websites, users are not willing to put up with a long loading time.

There are simply too many offers on the Internet. If you can literally tie your website's shoes when loading it, users will bounce and look at what the competition has to offer.

This increases your bounce rate and Google unfortunately registers this. Incidentally, the loading time of websites can often be improved by compressing images and graphics and uploading them in a suitable format.

Google rank 1 means ongoing optimizations

If you hear from providers that they will do a search engine optimization (SEO) once and then guarantee that your website will stay in first place forever and ever, you should listen up.

It's not for nothing that the saying goes: SEO is a marathon, not a sprint. To make this sentence a little easier to understand, we'll take you on a short excursion into the world of online SEO:

  • Google often changes its ranking factors: If ranking factors lose weight or new ones are added, website content must be adapted accordingly.
  • Competition is changing: A company goes bankrupt, a new one comes along. This changes the online content in the search results.
  • Competition & ranking factors: Anyone who takes SEO seriously stays up to date on this topic. Therefore, your competitors will always adapt their content according to the new ranking factors. You shouldn't lose out in the process.

What does that mean? Search engine optimization is a powerful way to rank number 1 on Google. But you should SEO as a long-term project so that you can see your Top ranking maintained in the long term can.

Further measures for a good ranking

So far, we've been talking about websites and search engine optimization. But there are other ways for you to land on page 1:

1. google ads

Google Ads (advertisements) are still displayed above the organic, SEO-related search results. Therefore, you can also reach the first place on Google through them.

However, you should keep in mind that your ad will not necessarily be displayed in every case. Google uses many criteria to decide which ads are displayed for which search queries. Your ad will also no longer be displayed if your budget has been used up.

Nevertheless, it is an effective online marketing method that allows you to new customers quickly can bring. Google Ads is therefore more of a short-term measure, whereas SEO should be designed for the longer term.

2. entry in Google company profile

The Google Company Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a company directory in which companies can register.

If you have done this and also entered your location, your company can also be found on Google Maps - and therefore also in the "Places" entry in search engines. This is still above the organic search results:

google rank 1 KOMMA99 search results

This Google Maps ad still appears above the organic results and therefore also brings you to page 1. image: © KOMMA99, screenshot of the search results for the keyword "dentist nearby" (as of 07/2024).

The best thing is that such entries in company directories bring you (high-quality!) backlinks to your website. Because in the best case scenario, you will always link to them in such company directories.

Can you buy the first place on Google?

No, this is not possible with organic search results. The search engine wants to offer users relevant content with added value that fulfills their search intention. Therefore, only such results are ranked at the top.

The only way to be placed at the very top and help out with money are Ads (advertisements). These always run over a certain budget and are displayed before the organic search results.

Conclusion: Google rank 1 due to many factors

You don't get to number 1 on Google overnight. It takes Perseverance, time and a lot of knowledge all about SEO, Google and the successful development of websites.
